Water-soluble sulfated polysaccharides isolated from two red algae Sphaerococcus coronopifolius (Gigartinales, Sphaerococcaceae) and Boergeseniella thuyoides (Ceramiales, Rhodomelaceae) collected on the coast of Morocco inhibited in vitro replication of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) at 12.5 mu g/mL. In addition, polysaccharides were capable of inhibiting the in vitro replication of Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) on Vero cells values of EC(50) of 4.1 and 17.2 mu g/mL, respectively. The adsorption step of HSV-1 to the host cell seems to be the specific target for polysaccharide action. While for HIV-1, these results suggest a direct inhibitory effect on HIV-1 replication by controlling the appearance of the new generations of virus and... |

Chemical aspects of the San Jorge Gulf benthic system, Argentina (2005-2010). A new contribution on the chemical aspects of the San Jorge Gulf benthic system in the distribution area of shrimp Pleoticus muelleri (Spence Bate, 1888) during 2005-2010 is presented. Concentration of dissolved oxygen in bottom water and mix layer and of total organic matter (TOM), total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), chlorophyll a (Chl a) and phaeopigments (Phaeo) in surficial sediments were analyzed. The origin and nutritional value of TOM deposited were also assessed through the C:N ratio. Water samples were collected during the Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP) seasonal research cruises in the period 2005-2010. Sediment samples... |

Pairs of soybean seeds and their correspondent expeller samples were collected from ten extrusion-expelling processing plants in Argentina. Seeds were analyzed for proximal composition, bulk moisture content (MC) and individual seed MC. Expeller were analyzed for proximal composition, bulk MC, protein solubility in KOH, expeller urease activity and free fatty acid content. Results indicated that average soybean composition was 136 g/kg MC, 207 g/kg oil and 391g/kg crude protein (CP), while the oil extraction efficiency (OEE) of the process was of 60.7%. The expeller composition was 922 g/kg dry matter (DM), 81g/kg oil and 442 g/kg CP. In soybean seeds, coefficient of variation (CV) of MC was 17.2%, 3.0% for CP and 5.1% for oil, while in SBE CV for DM was... |

During april 1995 hydrochemical research in a vertical column on the east side of the Galápagos Islands (Cruise T95/04/01) onboard of the INP R/V Tohallí indicated that concentrations of ammonium, nitrate, phosphate and chlorophyll-a were found stratified from the surface to deeper layers, on the other hand the maximum levels of nitrite and silicate were detected 70 m below the thermocline. The apparent oxygen use (AOU) varied from 1 to over 3 below the thermocline, this would indicate an oxidating environment due to the high levels of nitrate, phosphate, silicate and low concentrations of dissolved Oxygen (ca. 90-134[µM]) and ammonium (<0,1[µM]). According to the high salinity average (35,0 ups), nutritive elements (nitrate 15,6 [µM], silicate 13,1... |

This work has the objective of characterizing twenty corn landraces grown in the Campos Gerais region (Paraná State) in relation to its chemical composition (moisture, ash, protein, ether extract, dietary fiber and starch) and physical properties (weight of 1000 grains, real density, flotation index, granulometry and color). In addition, also the lab scale processing of the kernels from the varieties was carried out for producing starch; starch purity was evaluated by measuring its protein contamination. Amylose contents and viscoamylograph profile were also evaluated. The results showed that the evaluated landraces have differences in chemical composition as well as in pericarp/endosperm/germ proportions and consequently it should have different... |
